Siano was also doing drugs. Initially his consumption was recreational —at the Round Table he remembers taking a little pot, half a tab of acid, and perhaps some speed—but at the Gallery the pharmaceuticals got heavier. Ups would keep him going, downs would make him happy, and in March 1976 his new friends from the Boatel introduced him to heroin. “I took heroin for the first time on my twenty-first birthday. It made me throw up eight or nine times, but I loved it. It took away the pain.” Siano, it transpired, didn’t know how to handle success, even within the relative anonymity of New York’s night network. “I felt that I had to say the funniest things everywhere I went. I felt very insecure.” Heroin provided him with an anesthetic, and his earnings of six to seven hundred dollars a week meant that he could easily finance an intake that rarely cost more than fifty dollars a day. Here was a high priest who really lived up to his name.
